WINNIPEG FrEE PrESS, SATurDAY JulY 26, 2014 3 Continued from page 1 Continued from page 2 when the WSO will perform another commissioned musical piece as part of its Nordic Festival in October. Gimli composer Kenley Kristofferson's eight-minute piece Morgan (Morning) will explore the Icelanders' emotions as they left their homes en route to Canada. Even with the busier schedule, the festival remains family friendly, says longtime volunteer and board member Tim Arnason (Cam's second cousin – "Swing a stick wide enough and you'll hit one of us," he jokes). He remembers volunteering as a teen, selling snacks in the canteen and working on parade floats with his father. "The festival has been a part of my life for as long as I remember," he says, adding that the cultural element is just as important as the family links. "When you travel over to Iceland and get a sense of how close the bond is between our two nations, how important the festival is to people both there and here, it kind of cements your passion and brings things into focus." That connection is something Cam Arnason also felt first-hand when he toured Iceland a year ago, meeting some of his hundreds of cousins and visiting his great-grandfather's homestead. Back at home, that bond continues. "The community is so accepting of us, and all I ever hear from visitors is how friendly the citizens and the businesspeople are. I feel very happy and proud to be part of a town and an rM that supports us." High water on lake Winnipeg is a concern this summer, but the area is still marking milestones. Earlier this summer, Winnipeg Beach met the stringent standards for a Blue Flag designation from the Foundation for Environmental Education; a few years prior, the provincial campground was expanded, making it the first such site in Manitoba to be fully accessible to those with physical disabilities. Mayor Tony Pimentel — who spent years summering at Winnipeg Beach as a kid, and now owns boardwalk mainstay Playland, a retro arcade adorned with trippy concert posters and kitschy '70s pinups — says the community's longstanding policy of inclusion continues to resonate with visitors from all walks of life. "With fuel costs the way they are now, people are looking for a more economical way of enjoying their weekend," says Pimentel, noting the town is a quick 45-minute drive from Winnipeg. "And Winnipeg Beach is one of the only provincial parks where you don't require an entrance fee to get in." In recent years the area has developed a reputation as a retirement community, though Pimentel says it still attracts residents of all ages — with the permanent population of 1,000 or so more than tripling when cottage season's in full swing. "People are getting a lot more active, and Winnipeg Beach offers them the ability to do that," Pimentel says. "I live about a block and a half from the lake, so when I come home from work, if I want to go for a swim, or go fishing or canoeing, I can do that. If you're in Winnipeg, those things aren't really offered as much — especially at no cost."
