PAGE 6 • AUGUST 2014 Manitoba has brimmed at the borders with action and activity this summer - it isn't stopping yet. There's still another month to enjoy the season, and the usual timing of festivals and events is changing to refresh your senses. Aboriginal Music Week is going solo this year and slated to hit Winnipeg's hot spots on August 20 – 24. The festival has also added a new free concert series, Indigenous Music Without Borders, August 22 and 23 at The Cube in Old Market Square of the Exchange District. APTN is co- hosting the series featuring performances by Indigenous musicians who cross almost all musical and physical borders. It's quite the line-up, are you ready? On the Friday night is this year's Aboriginal Recording of the Year JUNO Award winner George Leach, and the multi- award winner Leela Gilday will also hit the stage. Six Nations guitar slinger Logan Staats is guaranteed to fire up the show. On the Saturday, the champion drum group Spirit Sands Singers will kick off the night with a performance. They'll be followed by Colombian music maverick Lido Pimienta, JUNO Award winners Burnt-Project 1, and Anishinabewin hip hop emcee Tall Paul. Also, Alaskan- born electronic music producer Astronomar will hit the decks between performances. Pop by and say hi to the folks at the APTN pop-up tent, where some of the musicians on the festival roster will be signing autographs and welcome you. Remember to ask for a photo op. This year the festival will be September 10 – 14, and it's one of the largest critical mass gatherings of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in North America. Pick up the next issue of First Nations Voice for more details. Have you heard the latest on the Adam Beach Film Institute? APTN has jumped onboard as the Exclusive Sponsor to support the amazing work Adam does in the community. He's also added to this summer's happenings with special movie screenings via Bandwidth. This is Adam Beach's latest venture which brings Hollywood movies to First Nation and Aboriginal communities – in the form of a travelling pop-up cinema that's complete with a concession He introduced the project, this past spring, to a few local communities - Norway House, Sandy Bay and Sagkeeng First Nations. The show is back on the road in Manitoba, so be on alert for when the next stop is in your community. The best part is all profits go back to the Adam Beach Foundation, which helps to create the next generation of film makers. What a great concept!
