32 War & remembrance The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (www.airmuseum.ca) at Brandon Municipal Airport created a monumental tribute to mark 75 years since the start of the Second World War in 2014. A bronze statue of an airman stands next to a 91-metre (300 foot) airfoil-shaped granite wall on which the names of more than 18,000 young men and women who died in service of the British Commonwealth air forces are engraved. The museum is on the site of one of 14 Manitoba bases where pilots and air crews from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the British Royal Air force trained under the plan. Just east of Brandon, at Canadian Forces Base Shilo, the RCA Museum, Canada's National Artillery Museum (www.rcamuseum.ca), takes an in-depth approach to military and Canadian history, with innovative outdoor and gallery exhibits of artifacts, artwork and weaponry. runWay models The Western Canada Aviation Museum (www.wcam.mb.ca), adjacent to Winnipeg's James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, houses a hangar full of history. A large collection of memorabilia and aircraft includes spy planes, biplanes and a flying saucer — the circular Avro Aerocar developed in the 1950s. Special exhibits and events — including Halloween and holiday theme days — are just the ticket for high-flying history buffs. viking patH In Gimli — Norse for the home of the gods — the New Iceland Heritage Museum (www.nihm.ca) maintains two locations that preserve the history of Icelandic immigrants who settled the area in 1875. Peruse artifacts and family histories preserved in the Book of Life at the Waterfront Centre, where you can check out Viking souvenirs in the gift shop. Across the street at the Lake Winnipeg Visitor Centre, exhibits focus on commercial fishing and the natural history of the lake. rCa MuseuM The award-winning RCA Museum is Canada's National Artillery Museum and a Manitoba Star Attraction. The Museum is located at CFB Shilo, only 20 minutes from Brandon, Manitoba.
