Gimli, which is Norse for home of the gods, was a welcoming harbour for Icelandic immigrants in 1875 and a legacy project is underway to create a green space with a water feature and bridge on the Lake Winnipeg waterfront where the town's famous Viking statue stands. VikiNg statUe – gimli 22 The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra salutes the largest Icelandic population outside of Iceland during its Nordic Festival Oct. 24-25 and Oct. 31, with a performance of local composer Kenley Kristofferson's eight-minute Morgun (Morning), commissioned in honour of the settlers who left Iceland in search of a new home. Family histories are preserved at the New Iceland Heritage Museum (www.nihm.ca), which has two locations in Gimli. Hint: Amma's Kitchen at the Waterfront Centre is the location where you can sample a prune torte called vinarterta.
