The world's most unique warming huts grace
Canada's longest naturally frozen outdoor skating
rink at The Forks (www.theforks.com) each
winter. Most designs are chosen through an
international art and architecture competition, and
past contributors include luminaries Frank Gehry
and Étienne Gaboury. The Red River Mutual
Trail has been the scene of a pop-up gourmet
restaurant, a winter fashion show featuring local
designers and an entertainment outpost during
Festival du Voyageur.
Nestled at the junction of the Assiniboine and
Red Rivers, The Forks National Historic Site has
been a natural meeting place for 6,000 years. View
constellations at the naked-eye observatory in the
Oodona Celebration Circle, browse in the eclectic
shops of the Johnston Terminal and The Forks
Market and enjoy local takes on global cuisine at
an array of casual and fine-dining restaurants.
In winter, brave the tabletops and jumps at the
Snowboard Fun Park, take a spin on the Olympic-
size skating rink, twirl to the music at the Canopy
skating rink or hit the river trail which ranges from
three to nine kilometres in length in any given
year. Rent skates in the Tower Atrium from
10 a.m.-10 p.m. daily.
