45 DraMa on tHe HigH c's Manitoba Opera (www.manitobaopera.mb.ca) salutes the Canadian Museum for Human Rights with a Cold War-era take on Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio. The story of a woman who sets out to rescue her wrongfully imprisoned husband opens the season nov. 22, 25 and 28 at the Centennial Concert Hall. In April, suitors die trying to win a princess's hand in Puccini's final opera Turandot. Manitoba's year oF Music Our province's music scene has an illustrious history. Neil Young launched his professional career here, as did The Guess Who, Chantal Kreviazuk, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Crash Test Dummies and The Weakerthans. Winnipeg hosted The JUNO Awards this spring, and the hits keep on coming in 2014, which has been declared the Year of Music in Manitoba. Manitoba liquor and lotteries launched a year of Music concert series at Casinos of Winnipeg (www.casinosofwinnipeg.com) and partnered with Manitoba Music (www.manitobamusic.com) on a mobile app that provides online listings of live music throughout the province. An eclectic roster of musicians appear at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, Sept. 12 at MTS Centre. In October, the BreakOut West Music Festival showcases some of Western Canada's most exciting new acts, and culminates with the Western Canadian Music Awards on Oct. 5 at the Club Regent Event Centre, which also hosts Boz Scaggs, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and The Doobie Brothers in October. The Winnipeg Folk Festival (www.winnipegfolkfestival.ca) and Jazz Winnipeg (www.jazzwinnipeg.com) present summer festivals as well as concert series throughout the year. And the West End Cultural Centre (www.wecc.ca) promotes artists who fall outside the meanstream, as well as popular touring acts. Hear a syMpHony There's something for everyone during the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's (www.wso.ca) extensive season, from Beethoven and Brahms to tributes to Elvis Presley and the Rat Pack, and concerts for kids. Romance rules on valentine's Day in 2015 with a performance of Ravel's Bolero and Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet. And hometown favourite Randy Bachman's Symphonic Overdrive makes its debut Dec. 5-7.
