"It's not like a hide-a-bed that gets folded in half or a futon that's a piece of foam," she says. "A Murphy bed is going to be comfort- able like a real bed because there is a real mattress on it." Murphy beds fold up into wall cabinetry that can be custom- ized to serve any purpose, whether the room doubles as an office, a sewing and craft room or a home gym. Homeown- ers can choose from adjustable shelves with or without doors, and a variety of colours in melamine or woods such as maple, cherry, oak and walnut. There is one very important consideration for keeping it all functional, however. "We would say that quality hard- ware with a proven record would be the key for making it all work for years to come," Janzen says. When planning, you will have to consider how much wall space you have. You need at least 114 centimetres (45 inches) for a sin- gle bed and up to 168 centimetres (66 inches) for a queen-size bed. "We have side-tilt beds as well, where the bed tilts down with the long side along the wall. And that's something we might use where there is a space limitation." Base prices start at $1,799 for a single up to $2,109 for a queen. Once you choose a size and mattress, you're ready to design your cabinets. Hiddenbed Canada Direct offers a similar option. The made- in-Manitoba Hiddenbed line is remarkably versatile, thanks to hardware developed by a mechanical engineer in Uruguay in 2003. Single, double, queen and bunk beds are hidden in desks or other functional furniture. Gail and Kristen Walker bought a space-saving bed from the local company when they downsized from a four-bedroom bungalow to a one-bedroom condo in the Exchange District. Kristen says the guest bed is so easy to use, it only takes one hand to convert it from desk to bed and back again. The advantage is in the balancing mechanism, which keeps the desktop horizontal so they can leave their laptop, printer and paperwork out when they pull out the bed. Hiddenbed Canada boasts you can even leave a drink on the desk without spilling a drop, and Kristen says it's true. "You can leave everything on it. The only problem is if you leave food or drink on it, then the dog can get it — because we did that once," she laughs. Priced from about $1,700 to $2,100, the beds are sold online at www.hiddenbed.ca. With a variety of Murphy and Hiddenbed designs and colours to choose from, you can find something for every decor. And when you look around, you won't see "beds, beds, beds!"
