The Winnipeg Folk Festival, in fact, will be welcoming back some of its summer acts this season to keep the sizzle going. "We definitely get excited about the buzz that gets created over some of the bands at the festival," said Kelly Romas, communica- tions co-ordinator at Winnipeg Folk Festival. "If they are touring, it's great to bring them back and give the fans another dose of them in the fall." Some of the returning acts include The Wooden Sky on Oct. 4 at the West End Cul- tural Centre and Boy & Bear with Bahamas on Oct. 23 at the Burton Cummings Theatre. The Folk Festival is also looking forward to Shakey Graves, who will do two shows in November. "His show on Nov. 24 sold out quickly," Romas said. "So we added one on the 25th as well, due to the popularity, and that one is also getting pretty close to selling out." The 25th Winnipeg International Jazz Festival wrapped up back in June, but Jazz Winnipeg is welcoming some top talent for its fall season, starting with 18-time Grammy winner Chick Corea and the Vigil on Sept. 23. "He hasn't been in Winnipeg since before there was a Jazz Festival, sometime in the early '80s," said Lynne Stefanchuk of Jazz Winnipeg. Jazz Winnipeg is also branching out to Brandon this coming season with a couple of shows featuring Royal Wood and Elizabeth Shepherd. "We don't know how it's going to go, we are partnering with the Folk Festival in Brandon to try and bring our programming into Bran- don, giving audiences there a chance to see us without having to hoof it into Winnipeg," Stefanchuk said. "Also, it gives our artists an extra gig while they are touring around. It gives them a chance to get an extra show in." Last but certainly not least, the West End Cul- tural Centre has a couple of massive shows lined up for the fall and winter that you won't want to miss. With 22 concerts from now until the end of December, the WECC will surely have some- thing to satisfy every musical taste. "There is a real diversity of music with our venue and this fall is no exception," said Kel- ly, communications manager at the WECC. On Oct. 18, Low will perform in support of its latest album, The Invisible Way. "Low is a band I've wanted to see in the WECC for a long time, and I know that I'm not the only one — they have been the most requested artist since I started as artistic director," Jason Hooper said. On Oct. 23, the WECC will also welcome The Smalls, a hard rock/metal band featur- ing Juno Award-winning bassist Corb Lund, who has since gone on to a successful career as an alt-country/folk solo artist. The band reunited this year following a 13-year hiatus after enjoying a successful career from 1989 – 2001.
