Often times, we ask young children "what do you want to be when you grow up?" It is a common question and the answers can be as simple as 'doctor, fireman, pilot', or as imaginative as 'unicorn princess, dinosaur, or ninja turtle.' Whatever the response, the earlier on we encourage our young peo- ple to think about their career path in life, the better. To become a doctor for example, you must be proficient in sciences and as a pilot, physics and mathematics are key. To become a police officer in the RCMP you need a variety of skills, including being able to problem solve, having strong leadership skills and being a team player – to name a few. These skills can be formed early on and provide an excellent base for any young person interested in joining the Force. As the teenage years approach, remind students who are interested in policing to pursue their studies, avoid using drugs and alcohol and become involved in their communities. For those young people who feel the RCMP is their true calling, we offer a hands-on approach to allow high school students a "sneak peek" at life as a RCMP Cadet. For the past four years, 32 Grade 11 and 12 students from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories have attended Depot Youth Camp at the RCMP training facility in Regina (Depot). The students selected for the RCMP Youth Camp form a co-ed group that is reflective of a typical RCMP cadet troop. By the end of the week- long camp, the group develops a good understanding of the career pos- sibilities offered by the RCMP thanks to this once-in-a-lifetime opportu- nity to experience Depot prior to submitting an RCMP application. This program allows students a true opportunity to not only explore Depot and all it has to offer, but to immerse themselves in the life of a Cadet and discover if a life in the RCMP is their calling. The students are selected based on academic achievement and their interest in a career in policing. They will learn what it's like to be a police officer in training through activities such as drill, driver simulation train- ing, and tours of the RCMP Academy and the RCMP Heritage Centre. As police officers, we spend countless hours interacting with kids and teenagers in our communities so we know first-hand how important it is that our youth have positive role models and are encouraged to follow their career aspirations. Depot Youth Camp is an exceptional program where students can take their first step towards becoming a police officer.
