Meet Dominic and Katie Dominic, a teen living with intellectual disabilities, loves to paint with his new friend, Katie. The two budding artists met in the Art Among Friends program housed in the basement studio of artist Shirley Levacy's Winnipeg home. Creating opportunities for young people of all abilities to socialize, collaborate and express themselves through art is what Art Among Friends is all about. Sometimes kids with a disability aren't included in a group. Art Among Friends gives them a chance to be part of a community – to connect with other youth. "The art has become a tool for communication," explains Shirley. This innovative program wouldn't be possible without Winnipeggers' support for United Way's partnership with Community Living Winnipeg. Because of compassionate people like you, Dominic and other kids in our community are gaining an improved sense of self-worth and purpose. Says Dominic's mom, "These art classes allow Dominic to learn, to excel and create beautiful art pieces in a safe, positive, fun and inclusive environment." The program has been a huge success. In 2012, Art Among Friends participants showcased their work at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. And with the help of their parents, many of the kids have begun selling their prints. But the real impact of the program can be seen on the faces of Dominic and Katie as they exchange smiles and laughter over their latest masterpiece. It doesn't take much to make a big difference For just 30 cents a day or about $110 a year, you can make it possible for a child with intellectual disabilities to make new friends, build their self-esteem, develop improved independence and become more engaged members of our community. Helping kids in Winnipeg be all they can be When we come together as a community we can ensure kids are set up to succeed in school and in life. Thanks to generous and caring Winnipeggers like you, United Way is able to invest in strategies and partnerships that provide children and youth with mentorship, counselling and out-of-school supports that nurture self-esteem, confidence, positive behaviours and a sense of belonging. United Way currently partners with 39 agencies, such as Community Living Winnipeg, to deliver youth-focused programs and services that help kids like Dominic realize their full potential. Did you know? In vulnerable neighbourhoods throughout Winnipeg, kids have nowhere to go and nothing to do after school. Without guidance, support and opportunities to engage and grow, far too many young people get into trouble – even turning to drugs and gangs. Last year, United Way supporters made it possible for 88,000 youth in Winnipeg to access positive, productive and supervised activities during the critical hours when they are not at school.
