All six medal-win- ning skips from the Sochi Olympics will have their teams ready for Selkirk including gold medallist Jennifer Jones, whose Winnipeg-based team is excited for the chance to play in their "backyard." Winnipeg skips Jeff Stoughton, Mike McEwen and Kristy McDonald are also looking forward to a home-province homecoming at the Masters. It's not very often these teams get the chance to play major tournaments in front of family and friends and they enjoy every moment being able to look up into the crowd and see familiar faces cheering them on. The Grand Slam of Curling is proud to bring the Masters to a curling hotbed like Manitoba. The province has hosted 10 Grand Slam tournaments in the past and teams from Manitoba have won a combined 12 Grand Slam of Curling titles. The Selkirk Curling Club has the experience and pas- sion for the game to help make this a successful event and the Selkirk Recreational Complex provides the perfect venue to host a Grand Slam tournament — giving the players a grand stage to show off their world-class skills and providing an in- timate atmosphere for fans to enjoy the games. The Masters is the opening leg of five stops on the Grand Slam of Curling series this season. Last year, fans in Abbots- ford, B.C., were treated to an unforgettable Masters tourna- ment. Glenn Howard, from Penetanguishene, Ont., defeated Edmonton's Kevin Martin to win the men's championship and finish the event with an undefeated 7-0 record while Ot- tawa's Rachel Homan held off world champion Eve Muirhead from Scotland to successfully defend the women's title. Several teams dismantled and changed up their rosters over the off-season, making the Masters even more compelling this year. The Masters will be the first major test for these teams not only for this season but also as they look ahead down the four-year road to the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. It will surely be a highly antici- pated event for fans to watch. ■ The Grand Slam of CurlinG iS Thrilled To open a new exCiTinG SeaSon wiTh The maSTerS TournamenT in Selkirk, Man.
