HaPPy TogeTHer Cont'd from page 87 While some prospective home buyers might not be familiar with the concept of visitable home design, McArthur says they quickly become converts once they see it for themselves. "Some people will go, 'The bathroom is so big but there's nothing in there.' Once you tell them the reason they'll say 'Right on, that makes sense,' " he says. "I've not heard one negative com- ment. We've actually gotten a lot of positive feedback." Signature Homes has its own multi-generational design on display in the Spring Parade of Homes. Home buyers can check out an example of it at the show home at 59 Appleford Gate in the Bridgwater Lakes neighbour- hood in Waverley West. The two- storey, 1,635-square-foot home features three bedrooms, includ- ing one on the main floor, three bathrooms, a walkout second- floor balcony and a family room with an entertainment centre and fireplace. McArthur says the house incor- porates several aspects of visit- able home design, meaning it's accessible for anyone regardless of age or ability. Features include a dining room area that can be converted into an additional bed- room, a front entrance without steps, wider interior hallways and doors (36-inch doors compared to the standard 32 inches), and a bathroom on the main floor that has room for a wheelchair to ma- noeuvre. In addition, it has a staircase that's six inches wider than the industry standard to accommodate a chair lift, and all doors on the second floor are 36 inches wide, even though visitable home guide- lines don't require them to be so.
