In Feb- ruary, the MHBA hosted an aging in place certifi- cation course, which was at- tended by about 40 build- ers, renovators, suppliers, architects and government officials. It was only the second such certification course to be offered in Canada, following the inaugural course offered in Halifax about a year and a half ago. "We are breaking ground here. We're way ahead of the rest of the Canadian home building community. Every- one's talked about (age-in-place) in the industry but we are actually doing it here in Manitoba," Moore says. "We see a need and we are filling a need. We don't want need to dictate urgency. We want to be ahead of the curve. We want to be out there as it happens." Comack stresses that planning for the future doesn't have to mean sacrificing in the present. In the case of Prairie View Lakes, the 475 homes in the 250-acre development will feature all the amenities young families are looking for, as well as lower taxes, close proximity to the city and flexible architectural guidelines. Ventura currently has about 18 lots available in the neighbourhood as part of the first phase of development on Fourth Avenue, including three display homes designed by Discovery, Gino's and Ventura home builders that are part of the Spring Parade of Homes. An additional 43 lots are expected to be released this summer. Comack says interest in the area has been extremely positive to date and he expects that to continue as more lots become available. "There's been a lot of positive momentum. In our opinion, it couldn't have gone better."
