"I will do one or two events, I don't think I'll do the Nordic pole walking or predicted walk any more because I've done that in the past. I'll look at the program and decide what I want to do." Skuba has participated each year since the Games torch was passed to the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults in Manitoba (ALCOA- MB), competing in the predicted walk for two years and winning a gold medal in the Nordic pole walking predicted walk at the 2014 Games in Neepawa. "I've been with ALCOA since its beginning, so I support all the activities that we do to ensure that people who are older have an opportunity and are encouraged to participate in all the activities that will keep them healthy and active and enjoying life," she says. "I was there right at the beginning when we were planning to establish ALCOA and get it going." ALCOA was incorporated federally in 1999, and the 55 Plus Games are a natural fit with the organization's efforts to change the way we think about aging by promoting opportunities and participation in age-friendly activities for life. "I have contributed as much as I can," Skuba says, adding ALCOA-MB does a good job of helping older adults understand that they can be contributing members of society and enjoy life at every age. She says it's important to maintain healthy social connections and to take part in activities that are mentally stimulating. And staying physically active is vital, contributing to everything from good sleep to a healthy digestive system. "I exercise regularly — in fact, I exercise every day," she says. "We have a gym here at Fred Douglas Place, and I lead exercise classes twice a week and then I go out for a walk and do other things. In the summertime, I garden and bike and enjoy the outside." Skuba urges anyone who is 55 or older to give the Games a shot, whether they participate in card games, Scrabble, team sports or track events. "There's something for everybody and something that is stimulating and enjoyable for everybody."
