WINNIPEG FREE PRESS, MAY 1, 2015 winnipegfreepress.com NAOSH Week events T he third annual SAFE Work Awards will be presented during NAOSH Week. Workplace Safety and Health and the Workers Com- pensation Board established the awards program in 2013 to recognize employers and workers who demonstrate success or innovation in making their workplaces safer. In 2013, winners included: • Jaret Olford, Museum Manager, Children's Museum – Employer Safety Award • Edward Utko, Safety Committee Member and Production Supervisor, Paramount Windows – Worker Safety Award • Brent Helgeson, Town Superintendent, Town of Gillam – Safety and Health Professional Award • Construction Safety Association of Manitoba (CSAM) – Safety Group Award The second annual SAFE Work Awards, coordinated by SAFE Work Manitoba, were presented during NAOSH Week in 2014. The winners included: • Tolko Manitoba Kraft Papers – Employer Safety Award • Cindy Strath, Supervisor, Granny's Poultry – Worker Safety Award • Andre Murphy, Manager, Tolko Manitoba Kraft Papers – Safety and Health Professional Award • SAFE Workers of Tomorrow – Safety Group Award Playing it SAFe Sunday, May 3 Steps for Life Walk Kildonan Park, Winnipeg Host organization: Threads of Life (www.threadsoflife.ca) Time: Registration begins at 10 a.m. The five-kilometre fundraising walk starts at about 11 a.m. For information, see www.stepsforlife.ca Monday, May 4 NAOSH Week 2015 Manitoba Launch Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Winnipeg Host organization: The Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) - Manitoba Chapter (www.cssemb.org) Time: 8:30 a.m. Check out the museum, enjoy a continental breakfast and take in safety presentations. NAOSH Week 2015 Launch - City of Brandon Launch Brandon City Hall Host organization: City of Brandon (www.brandon.ca) Time: 12 p.m. Join dignitaries and speakers for a NAOSH Week flag-raising and barbecue. NAOSH Week 2015 Launch - Winkler/Morden Triple E RV, Winkler Host organization: Agricultural Manufacturers of Canada Safety Association (www.amcsafety.ca) Time: 8:30 a.m. Winkler Mayor Martin Harder will officially launch the week. Tuesday, May 5 NAOSH Week Celebration University College of the North, The Pas Host organization: Construction Safety Association of Manitoba (www.constructionsafety.ca) Time: 11 a.m. Join CSAM for an afternoon dedicated to celebrating NAOSH Week, featuring guest speakers, a COR presentation and lunch. Wednesday, May 6 NAOSH Week Celebration 160 Hwy 10-A North, Flin Flon Host organization: Construction Safety As- sociation of Manitoba (www.constructionsafety.ca) Time: 9 a.m. Start the day with a continental breakfast, guest speakers and a COR presentation. North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week is just one week out of the year, but it can have lasting impact for Manitobans of all ages. Private workplaces take the opportunity to present activities and events that touch on every- thing from diabetes awareness and massage therapy to driver safety. For example, Motor Coach Industries is offering different theme events each day from Monday, May 3 through Friday, May 8, including fire extinguisher training classes and AED training for employees who want to learn to use automated external defibrillators. There's a kids colouring contest, demonstrations of products that are ergonomically safer, and even a healthy lunch. Public events include a sold-out Bingo Bowl fundraiser for Safe Workers of Tomorrow, the an- nual Steps for Life Walk in Kildonan Park and a record five NAOSH Week launches across the province, in Winnipeg, Brandon, Flin Flon, The Pas and Winkler/Morden. Awards to the Wise Recognizing safety champions in Manitoba B usinesses across Manitoba hold special events throughout North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week to focus attention on safety and health on the job and in the home. Last year, Bison Transport included a sleep apnea clinic in its slate of events. Red River College held a Safety Selfie contest in which staff and students photographed themselves wear- ing safety gear or demonstrating a safe practice, and Palliser Furniture staged a mock accident investigation, among other events. Maple Leaf Foods and Barkman Concrete earned national NAOSH Week awards for clever in-house campaigns. Maple Leaf Foods held a family safety fair and Barkman Concrete produced a silent-film training video. On Sept. 4, 2014, SAFE Work Manitoba saluted eight Mani- toba workplaces that promoted workplace safety through special activities and sustained prevention programs.
