33 FOLKLORAMA | LANCE THOMPSON Vikings invade Gimli each summer during one of North America's oldest ethnic festivals, Islendingadagurinn, which marks its 126th year July 31- Aug. 3. Take in demonstrations of ancient warfare tactics at the Viking encampment, check out the sandcastle contest, dance to live music on multiple stages and snack on authentic delicacies like vinarterta — a prune torte that's the specialty of many an Icelandic house. Gimli, which is Norse for home of the gods, was a welcoming harbour for Icelandic immigrants in 1875, and family histories are preserved at the New Iceland Heritage Museum's two locations. > icelandicfestival.com > nihm.ca @mjoyingit 33 Viking Village which houses artifacts dating back to 1899, along with traditional pysanky (Easter eggs) and embroidered clothing. Just 20 minutes north of Dauphin, the first Ukrainian-Catholic mass held in Canada in 1897 is commemorated at the Trembowla Cross of Freedom Historic Site and St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church. From July 31-Aug. 2, Cossacks on horseback, musicians and food lovers descend on Dauphin's Selo Ukrainan festival site during Canada's National Ukrainian Festival. The site boasts a heritage village, three stages and an 11,000-seat amphitheatre. > tourismdauphin.ca > cnuf.ca Moveable FEASTS Fall suppers — or fowl suppers — bring out the best in local cooks who contribute to groaning tables in community halls throughout the province after the harvest. From mid-September until early November, staples include turkey, cabbage rolls, hand-made perogies, Ukrainian sausage and fresh apple and pumpkin pie. In October, diners flock to St. Claude's Haywood Fowl Supper by the busload, tempted by menus that may feature classic French-Canadian favourites tourtierre and beignes croches along with roast beef, ham and loads of trimmings.
