But the biggest party is at The Forks in Winnipeg, where Canada's national Aboriginal broadcaster, APTN, hosts its annual Aboriginal Day Live & Celebration on June 20. Tens of thousands of people join the festivities, hoop dancing to hip-hop, with traditional drumming, concerts, a market, powwow and more. In September, the Indigenous Music Awards on Sept. 11 are a highlight of the week-long Manito Ahbee Festival, set for Sept. 9-13. One of Canada's largest celebrations of aboriginal culture, Manito Ahbee — which translates as "where the Creator sits" in Ojibway— honours the seven sacred teachings: Love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility and truth. The week features an international competition powwow, indigenous market and trade show and a Métis showcase with square-dancing and jigging contests. Head to The Pas for the 50th annual Opaskwayak Indian Days at Opaskwayak Cree Nation in August. Canoe races, moose and goose calling competitions and a scavenger hunt are part of the fun. Fuel up on moose stew and bannock and enjoy a packed program of live entertainment and dancing. > theforks.com > aptn.ca > manitoahbee.ca > opaskwayak.ca Celebrate FIRST NATIONS ABORIGINAL DAY LIVE & CELEBRATION MANITO AHBEE FESTIVAL BEIBEI LU
