37 Explore Steinbach's Mennonite Heritage Village to get a hands-on feel for how Russian Mennonites who settled the area in the 19th century lived and worked. Drop by the Livery Barn Restaurant to sample borscht, vereniki and fresh bread made from wheat ground at the village's working windmill. Pembina Valley is another top destination for soaking up Mennonite culture — not to mention food that really schmecks. Some 6,000 Manitoba Mennonites migrated to Chihuahua, Mexico in the 1920s and Winkler is home to many of their descendants. At J & H Toppers Restaurant, you might hear diners ordering in German — whether MENNONITE Traditions they opt for tortilla soup, enchiladas or perogies — and the Sunny Day Products store is the place to find fresh corn tortillas and other locally made and imported goodies. Mennonite food is a hot draw during the Altona Sunflower Festival, set for July 24-26, and during Reunion Days on the Labour Day weekend at the Pembina Threshermen's Museum, midway between Winkler and Morden. Explore sod and log houses, a general store and vintage farm equipment, and experience life as a Mennonite settler with hands- on activities. > mennoniteheritagevillage.com > sunnydayproducts.com > altona.ca > threshermensmuseum.com MENNONITE HERITAGE VILLAGE
