45 o behind the magnificent facade of St. Boniface Cathedral, overlooking the Red River on Tache Avenue, to take a tour of the cathedral and cemetery. Father of Manitoba Louis Riel is among the prominent citizens interred in the cemetery. Walk a short distance to check out a pair of Riel's moccasins at the St. Boniface Museum on Tache Avenue. The two-storey oak log structure is the oldest building in Winnipeg, constructed by the Grey Nuns who arrived in Manitoba from Quebec in 1844. It served as an orphanage, hospital, seniors' care home and school, and was occupied until 1956. These days, its furnished rooms depict G everyday life at the turn of the 19th century, along with historical exhibits and artifacts. Special programming often includes Halloween tours, during which staff share ghost stories of St. Boniface. In December, the museum is decorated for the holidays. Riel House National Historic Site, at 330 River Rd. in St. Vital, is in permanent mourning for the leader of the Red River Rebellion. Posthumously acknowledged as a founding father of Manitoba, Louis Riel lay in state here after he was executed for treason in Regina in 1885. The rooms, draped in black crepe, are furnished as they would have been in the spring of 1886. The house where celebrated author Gabrielle Roy was born in 1909 has been restored as a museum at 375 Deschambault St. Maison Gabrielle Roy House is open year-round, and Pére Noël often drops by in December. Roy, whose novels include Governor General's Award winners Bonheur d'occasion and Rue Deschambault, was a teacher and an early member of Cercle Molière. Her books are available for purchase in the gift shop. > cathedralestboniface.ca > msbm.mb.ca > parkscanada.gc.ca/riel > maisongabrielleroy.mb.ca lives here History ST.
