25 DROP the PUCK The good old hockey game brings the roar of the crowd to MTS Centre when the Winnipeg Jets NHL team hit the ice for regular-season games from October through April, and there's plenty of pre- and post-game action at surrounding pubs, clubs and eateries. Metropolitan Lounge is located in a revamped 1919 theatre across Donald Street from MTS Centre, and Tavern United is hockey headquarters next door to the rink on Graham Avenue. In the Wheat City, the Brandon Wheat Kings suit up for Western Hockey League action at the Keystone Centre, and Manitoba Junior Hockey League teams score with fans in Dauphin, Neepawa, Winnipeg, The Pas, Selkirk, Winkler, Virden, Swan Valley, Portage la Prairie, Steinbach and Waywayseecappo. > jets.nhl.com > wheatkings.com > mjhl.com WINNIPEG JETS NHL HOCKEY TEAM JOHN WOODS | WINNIPEG FREE RESS Who's your CADDY? Picking which club to use to make that shot may be easier than deciding which of Manitoba's more than 120 golf courses to play. From lakeside links, to fairways next to farmers' fields, to putting greens nestled along rocky Canadian Shield outcrops, tee off at top courses surrounded by Manitoba's natural beauty. From short 9-hole courses to championship calibre courses, Manitoba's golf courses offer great options for golfers of all skill levels. As you head east down the Trans-Canada Highway, you can't miss Falcon Lake Golf Course in the Whiteshell. What you're seeing from the highway is hole #2 on this popular and pretty course, with its fairways lined with thick forest and Falcon Creek coming into play on nine of the 18 holes. In Manitoba's Interlake region, it's no surprise that water hazards often come into play. As you get set to tee off at hole #12 at the championship Hecla Golf Course, try not to be distracted by the beautiful sight of Lake Winnipeg. The lake will happily steal your ball and a stroke from your score. Find fun and frolic on the fairways in Western Manitoba, home to many 9-hole courses. The 9-hole Deloraine Golf & Country Club is lined with giant poplars and nestled around the town reservoir. Don't be fazed by the par-4 #7, nicknamed "the Wall", where the front of the green is raised with railroad ties. Heading south to the Pembina Valley, you'll find one of Manitoba's premier courses, Kingswood Golf & Country Club in La Salle. With its strategically placed hazards, the 18-hole course just minutes outside Winnipeg has several signature holes, including the par-3 #8, which will take you over the La Salle River. The Parkland region is home to the Clear Lake Golf Course. The course was opened in 1934 after relief camp workers during the Great Depression supplied labour for the back nine. Today the log clubhouse – designated a heritage building – looks much the same as when it first opened. Also the same is the 50 foot vertical drop at hole #17. It's as if you're teeing off the edge of a cliff – a daunting and yet exciting par-3 challenge. Learn more about Manitoba's golfing options at travelmanitoba.com.
