THE second weekend in july at birds hill provincial park #hearallyear LIVELY GATHERINGS Tune in MUSIC Festivals There's always music in the air in Manitoba, and the summer festival season is jam- packed. Get in the swing June 11-21 during the TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival, which has featured everyone from Sonny Rollins to The Roots. Then, bike to Birds Hill Provincial Park and camp out from July 9-12 during the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Famous for its mellow groove and blend of folk, bluegrass, roots, funk and world music, the festival draws some of North America's most popular acts each year. Join the hoedown at Dauphin's Countryfest June 25-28, when headliners including Miranda Lambert and The Perpetrators play the festival's famous amphitheatre. Don't bother saving room for dessert at the Winnipeg BBQ & Blues Festival in August, when both the performers and the concessions are sure to be smokin' hot. And enjoy a first-class showcase of First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists during Aboriginal Music Week Aug. 18-22 at several downtown Winnipeg venues. The 23rd Back Forty Folk Festival kicks off on the first Sunday in June in Morden, with artisans, food vendors and more music than you can shake a drumstick at. Classic acts are Rockin' the Fields of Minnedosa July 31-Aug. 2, and the Brandon Folk, Music and Art Festival continues to up the ante at its 31st festival, set for July 24-26. An artisan trade show and eclectic musical slate are on tap at the Fire & Water Festival in Lac du Bonnet on the August long weekend. Great Woods Music Festival sets the scene Aug. 7-9 in Beausejour for blues, rock and roots along the Brokenhead River in Great Woods Park. Rossburn's DUKEFest Music Festival, Aug. 14-15, is named for an eight-foot-tall black bear who roamed the territory from 1978 until 1992. Duke has since been commemorated with a life-size bronze statue.
