63 For the first time in more than 50 years, Manitoba will host a major exhibition of classical antiquities as the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) presents Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin (April 26, 2015 to April 2016). The WAG is one of only two venues in North America to present this prestigious collection of ancient Greek and Roman art from the Berlin State Museum. Rarely seen outside of Europe, the collection represents the birthplace of so much that is the heartbeat of modern culture. With over 160 works, Olympus includes marble statues and reliefs, bronze statuettes, terracotta vases, and jewelry dating from the 5th century BC to the 2nd century AD. Get to know the gods and other classical Greek and Roman personalities with these artworks renowned for their beauty as well as their cultural and historic merit. Get the kids in on the antiquity fun as the WAG has teamed up with the Manitoba Lego Users Group to build five monumental Lego models, including the Parthenon, an amphitheatre, scene from a chariot race and three large figures of the gods, Zeus, Athena and Dionysus. Bring the family for LEGO building programs on Sunday afternoons. Visit wag.ca for a full list of Olympus programming.
