C hief development officer Nancy Bremner says new CDC board members are striving to rebrand the Local Govern- ment District. Indeed, plans are afoot to rejuvenate the district's image by promoting its storied past and in- jecting new life into popular activities and amenities. To this end, tax incentives have helped to grow the community's busi- ness and residential sectors. "People who love water sports will be thrilled to know that an entrepre- neur has opened a business that will provide a van pick-up service and outdoor equipment rentals such as tubes, canoes and kayaks," says Brem- ner, adding the Pinawa Channel is now accessible to visitors who do not bring their own watercraft. Needless to say, the river yields pike, pickerel, sauger, bass and mariah (inland cod that yields delicious tail meat) to name a few desirable fish species. Another new business accommo- dates tourists by arranging bus trips from Winnipeg for day-long excursions. Since 1998, when Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) decommissioned its site, residential properties have re- covered in value, but infill is still avail- able for those who wish to relocate to the area, a combination of glorious wilderness and urban amenities. The riverfront and the mixed forest that thrives along its edge are access- ible by the Pinawa Channel Herit- age Walk, Ironwood Trail and Alice Chambers Trail. The network of town and wilderness paths, which intersect with the Trans Canada Trail, are ideal for a leisurely walk or energetic hike, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, depending on the season. Moose, black bear, beaver, fox and numer- ous bird species can be spotted and photographed, and the town has become a virtual deer sanctuary, with small herds of the animals wandering the streets or sleeping on lawns. A suspension bridge that spans the Pinawa Channel is a delightful attraction for young and old, challen- ging the child in the human spirit to set it swaying by jumping across its length. A pavilion located on a granite outlook provides a relaxing site from which to observe nature's splendour. Pinawa is renowned for its chal- lenging 18-hole golf course, parts of which are constructed on stone outcroppings that afford memorable views of the river and area. For those who enjoy a less strenu- ous form of tennis or badminton, some courts have been converted into pickleball courts, and for boaters, the marina has two launch sites and many mooring slips and canoe racks that can be rented on a yearly basis. The nearby Pinawa Rowing and Sailing Club accommodates non-motorized watercraft, and members have access to equipment and lessons. The famous Burger Boat, with its selection of burgers, hot dogs, chips and other summer favourites, remains a marina icon. The town also has a public beach and swimming pool, both of which are staffed by lifeguards during the holiday season. Organized activities that draw lots of contestants and onlookers include the Lund Mania Fishing Tournament and the Pinawa Pike Classic. The Lund event is free to enter and will be held July 18. It is considered part of the Lund Tournament Trail, an ongoing catch-and-release cross- country pickerel derby with $15,000 in prizes. The Pike Classic was organ- ized for the first time last October by Nancy Bremner, Jerry Kozak and Allan Cassidy. It was such a success- ful community fundraiser that it will be repeated Oct. 3 - 4 this year. Call 1-800-806-0412 or email info@pinawa- pikeclassic.com to register. In winter, the Pinawa Cross Country Ski Club helps to groom and maintain many kilometres of ski and snowmobile trails accessible by crossing the dam diversion over the Pinawa Channel. Non-members are welcome to enjoy the trails and eat in the restaurant. Though its name means calm, this lovely town and area in the Whiteshell also knows how to rock. ❙ New energy sparks growth in scenic region By David Square For the Free Press Rediscover PinAWA While it's named For calm Waters, there's Plenty oF excitement to be had in PinaWa.
