his past May and June, historic events
that are part of Indigenous Peoples
history in Canada were recognized.
The Truth and Reconciliation Closing Events
were May 31 – June 3 in Ottawa, and National
Aboriginal Day was celebrated across the
country on June 21.
This month, APTN looks back to a
momentous event, The Oka Crisis, which
began on July 11, 1990, in Oka, Quebec and
lasted for a period of three months. In honour
of the 25-year anniversary, APTN presents
Indian Summer: The Oka Crisis, a two-part
series on July 10 and July 11.
Indian Summer: The Oka Crisis, a fictional
drama based on news headlines from 1990,
is an account of how Mohawk People banded
together in protest to protect their Peoples'
sacred grounds from a golf course and
residential development. Their actions lead
to the largest deployment of Canadian troops
since the Korean War. The Oka Crisis was
one of the most widely publicized events of its
time and brought First Nations issues to the
forefront of the nation's and world's minds.
The series features now more than well-
known Indigenous talent: writer and director
Gill Cardinal, and cast members Tantoo
Cardinal (Iba Beauvais), George Leach (Joe
"Stonecarver" David) and Eric Schweig (Terry
Doxtator).
Indian Summer: The OKA Crisis (Part
1) airs Friday, July 10 and (Part 2) airs
Saturday, July 11 at 9:00 p.m. MT on
APTN West.
