For many children, reading is a source oF pleasure — a Fountain oF inFormation, inspiration For imagination, and a temporary escape to a diFFerent world. There are many reading related activities that can entertain your child over the summer. Check out the Winnipeg Public Library (wpl.winnipeg.ca) and the TD Summer Reading Club (tdsummerreadingclub.ca). You will be surprised at how many 'I'm bored' moments will be squashed by all the fun that is accessible online. Unfortunately, for children who struggle with reading, the thought of reading a book is a source of pain and shame. What to do? Whatever you do – do not wait until fall, because by then, their skills will decline even further. Although many parents feel guilty about asking their child to work over the summer, the pride in learning to read will far outweigh the whining that you might hear. If you can afford it, hire a tutor to teach your child basic phonic skills (yes, it's old school – but it works). If a tutor isn't an option for you, check out some of the programs and computer apps you can use to work with your child on a daily basis (our website, www.mindmattersclinic.ca, has a section on resources that describes a variety of programs). A guideline for choosing books your child can independently read is the 'five finger rule.' Open up to any page of a book, and have your child read it to you. Raise a finger each time they come to a word that they cannot read. When you get to the fifth finger, wave the book goodbye. If you have a budget for summer camp, our Summer Day Camp for children who struggle with reading, math, or social skills could fit the bill. It's a full day of fun (arts and crafts, juggling,), self-esteem building (with a psychologist), and direct instruction. Some fees could be covered by extended health- care benefits (for psychology or speech and language therapy). Call 204-477-8555 to learn more about this unique summer day camp.
