We're talking about the kind with cameras, lights and actors. "The Circus" is the term for the trailers and trucks that carry all the accoutrements necessary for a television or movie shoot on a location. Buffalo Gal Pictures (BGP) brought their circus to Grosse Isle to shoot The Pinkertons, a show based on the adven- tures of The Pinkerton Detective Agency circa 1850s and onward. "We really enjoyed Grosse Isle," says Phyllis Laing, BGP's president and producer. "We have a fairly big footprint anywhere we're working and I was actually surprised at how well we fit our 'circus' out there." BGP didn't just bring film crews, they set up Avco trailers for the office staff as well. "We were quite tucked away, so I don't think we caused too much chaos!" Laing says the people and the town were wel- coming and the crew didn't mind the daily drive from Winnipeg. "It was quite a lovely spot to be in, and we're defin- itely hoping to continue that relationship." Frances Smee, reeve for the RM of Rosser, says hosting the TV crew was a positive experience for the town, as well. "When The Pinkertons first approached us about filming the series in our community they said that they try to leave any location they use better than the way they found it," she says. "They were true to their word and were really great to work with." The production company made a point of using local businesses, making purchases in nearby Stonewall and hiring local tradespeople. Space in local churches was used and donations were given to support them. The Grosse Isle Hall received a monthly fee for its use. It's the type of facility that can be difficult for smaller communities to maintain and operate ef- ficiently, and Smee says the monthly rent paid by The Pinkertons was a significant boost. "They were very flexible in allowing events to go on in the hall so there were many occasions that had an authentic western saloon as their backdrop — even wedding receptions!" says Smee.
