BOMBERS IN THE COMMUNITY Tackle Hunger Drive Scores with Fans WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS FANS STEPPED UP IN A BIG WAY TO SUPPORT WINNIPEG HARVEST DURING THE PUROLATOR TACKLE HUNGER GAME DAY FOOD DRIVE ON JULY 10. THE COMMUNITY EFFORT BROUGHT IN MORE THAN TRIPLE LAST YEAR'S TAKE. " W e are extremely proud of our fans, who continue to increase the amount of food donated to Winnipeg Harvest year after year. Last year, our team raised 97,700 pounds of food for the Tackle Hunger game; this year, our fans have set a Bombers record for food raised at 297,200 pounds," Bombers president and CEO Wade Miller said in a press release following the game. "The Winnipeg Blue Bombers share Winnipeg Harvest's vision to help create a community that no longer requires food bank services. Until that time, we are proud partners in developing long-term solutions for tackling hunger in Winnipeg." That partnership has been in place for 28 years. The club asks fans to Bring a Tin for the Bin — a non-perishable food item — to every home game at Investors Group Field, and it supports Winnipeg Harvest in the community, as well. On July 3, the team held a season kick-off block party that was followed by the second annual Give30 Fast & Furious Feast at former Blue Bombers offensive lineman Obby Khan's restaurant, Shawarma Khan. The national Give30 campaign continues until mid-September. 2015 marks the 13th season Purolator has partnered with the CFL to hold one dedicated game-day food drive in each CFL city. To date, the program has delivered more than 8 million pounds of food to food banks across the country. Last year, the Tackle Hunger program raised the equivalent of 1.3 million pounds of food. This year, the goal is 1.4 million pounds of food. As part of the program, Purolator also makes a donation to Winnipeg Harvest every time the Bombers squad sacks a quarterback. Winnipeg Harvest executive director David Northcott said the timing of the game-day food drive is particularly helpful since food donations are at their lowest during the summer months. Want to help?
