Last season, the Blue Bombers raised more than $200,000 for Football Manitoba and the Winnipeg Rifles Football Club. And the club is well on the way to meeting — and quite likely beating — that total in 2015. So far this season, 50/50 winners have collected a small fortune at each home game: The June 19 preseason game netted one ticket holder $36,695. On July 2, the prize rose to a whopping $58,623, and the winning ticket at the July 10 home game netted its owner $46,658. BOMBERS PREPARE TO DO SOME LION TAMING By Scott Billeck for the Winnipeg Free Press With back-to-back losses in the West Division over the past two weeks, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be looking to come roaring back when they take on the B.C. Lions at Investors Group Field tonight. B ut with injuries to quarterback Drew Willy and slotback Nick Moore during a Week 5 road trip to Edmonton, the Bombers have some healing to do heading into Week 6 of the 2015 season. The B.C. Lions are 2-0 in the West Division this season, have averaged 31 points per contest in those games and own a 10-5 record against the Bombers since 2008. B.C. took the season series last year 2-1, including a close 28-23 win. The Bombers had a painful outing last week in Edmonton, both on the scoreboard in a 32-3 loss and within the game, with the loss of Willy, Moore, defensive back Graig Newman and offensive lineman Devin Tyler. Before Willy's knee was injured, putting him out of commission following a tackle from Edmonton's Eddie Steel, the score was a close 4-3 for Edmonton. After the injury, it turned into a tough day at the office, as Edmonton dominated the rest of the game. It was also a wakeup call. Whether or not Willy is in play, the Bombers still have to keep their heads in the game, either with Brian Brohm, who threw two interceptions on his first eight pass attempts in relief for Willy, or with Robert Marve, who has shown flashes of brilliance in spot appearances this season. Doubtless the Bombers have a long list of things to do better this week, and turning over the ball less will be a good start. To their credit, the Bombers defence played well last week, with the front seven doing a great job at containing the Eskimos run game; they had just 26 yards before Shakir Bell broke off a 69- yard run. Running back Cameron Marshall looked good when given the rock early as the rain last week in Edmonton thwarted the passing game. Marshall was effective, rushing seven times for 55 yards, including a 26-yard scamper that came up just short of a touchdown. It will be interesting to see how Marshall is used heading into the B.C. game. The incumbent, the elusive Paris Cotton, was held to just 17 yards on six carries last week. The Bombers offence could benefit by getting some possessions in the red zone tonight. B.C. is dead last in the league in opponent red zone time, allowing seven touchdowns to opposing teams in nine trips. On the flip side of the coin, the Bombers defence can take solace in the fact that the Lions are second worst in the CFL inside the 20-yard line, converting five touchdowns in 11 tries. Meanwhile, the team has to hope woes for kicker Lirim Hajrullahu don't continue to plague the sophomore. Hajrullahu failed to convert on a 42-yard attempt in the infancy of the game in Edmonton last week, his shortest of the season, and is just 6-for-10 this year on point-after attempts. It remains to be seen if the Bombers can use the services of defensive lineman Bryant Turner, who is currently on the six- game injured list with a bummed hand. Greg Peach was also added to the defensive infirmary this past week, being placed on the six-game injured list. ❚ Cameron Marshall (32) scores a touchdown against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats' during the June 19 preseason game at Investors Group Field.
