Silverisconcernedwith uncoveringcausesofsocial problems,andfinding solutions.Lastyearhe publishedAboutCanada: Poverty,abookoutliningpolicy changesneededtoaddress poverty.Hehasalsoco-edited upcomingbooksaboutthe low-incomehousingcrisisin Canada,andhowinequality contributestopoorhealth. Silverispurposefulinhis researchprocess,working closelywiththosewhoare "doingreallycoolthings"to improvetheircommunities.He isalsoconnectedwithUICS students,andteachesboth introductoryandadvanced- levelcourses. ThecurrentVPExternalAffairs fortheUWinnipegStudents' Association,SetteecametoUICS whileworkingasamentorat theWiiChiiwaakanakLearning Centre.Hewasimpressedby thecloseconnectionsUICS facultymembershavewith communities,andhowthe classesallowforanexchange ofinformationwithpeoplewho oftenaren'theard. Setteeisknownfororganizing communityeventssuchasthe AllNationsMedicineWalk,and ispassionateabouthisculture andIndigenousceremony. Heplanstopursuegraduate studiesatUWinnipeg,witha goalofcontributingtosocial changeintheWestEnd,where hegrewup. Alumna:AndreaGuimond OVERCOMING BARRIERS AndreaGuimondbeganher careerasacommunityjustice worker—whichshedescribes as"exactlythetypeofworkI wantedtogetinto"—justas shewasfinishingherclasses atUWinnipeg.Sheinitially cametotheUICScampus fortheBeginningUniversity Successfully(BUS)Program, andeventuallyearnedherBA withadoublemajorinUICS andCriminalJustice. Guimondsayssheconfronted manyofthebarriersto educationthatIndigenous studentsoftenface.After severalyearsworkinginchild andfamilyservices,shewent backtoschooltoassistthose inthecommunitywhoface systemicbarriers. ShesaysUICScoursesappealedto herbecausetheywerecommunity- drivenand grounded. TheUrbanandInner-CityStudies(UICS) programisaninterdisciplinarymajorcombining traditionalurbanstudieseducationwitha criticalexaminationoftheuniquechallenges experiencedby marginalizedmembersof Canada'surbanpopulation—suchaspoverty, racismandsocialexclusion. Studentscanworktoward3-year,4-yearand HonoursBachelorofArtsDegrees,oraMinor orCertificate. Thedepartment'slocationonSelkirkAvenue inWinnipeg'sNorthEndallowsforhands-on learningopportunitiesviarelationshipswith nearbycommunityorganizationsandagencies. Thesmallcampusalsoservesasawelcoming bridgetouniversityforstudentsfromtheinner city,whomayformcloserelationshipswiththe department'ssupportivestaffandfaculty. Thefast-growingprogramispreparingfor aJanuary2017movetoaninnovativenew locationatthesiteoftheformerMerchant's Hotel,whichwillincludeaffordablehousing, retaildevelopment,communityaccess,and spacefortheCEDA-PathwaystoEducation Program.
