TREMBOWLA CROSS OF FREEDOM HISTORIC SITE AND MUSEUM (PHS) Trembowla Cross of Freedom Historic Site and Museum is the site of the first Ukrainian Catholic Divine Liturgy held in Canada in 1897. St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, preserved as the oldest in Canada (1898), a monument of the first Ukrainian Catholic Bishop Nykyta Budka, a grotto, pioneer home, Trembowla school and other historic buildings and plaques are also on site. Open daily, end of May to end of August, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and by appointment. JOHN THE BAPTIST UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH (PHS) The great wave of Ukrainian immigration to Manitoba between 1896 and 1914 brought new architectural forms to the Prairies. St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church is located in the beautiful rolling hills near Riding Mountain National Park. The church is a rare example of a domed Ukrainian church constructed of logs. location: PR 566, 11.5 km from Menzie Ethelbert ETHELBERT & DISTRICT MUSEUM Ethelbert & District Museum features outdoor clay oven, old school room, kitchen, sewing room depicting the life of the early settlers to the region. Open summer hours, by appointment in winter. Admission charged. location: 35 Railway Ave. N p: 204-742-3761, 204-742-8860 (July, August) Gilbert Plains WASYL NEGRYCH PIONEER HOMESTEAD (PHS) Wasyl Negrych Pioneer Homestead, one of the most impressive folk sites in North America, contains the oldest known Ukrainian-style house in Manitoba and the most complete set of period farmyard buildings in the province. Constructed in 1899, there are 10 log buildings. The 1908 bunkhouse contains a rare example of a traditional Ukrainian clay bake-oven and is the only known structure to feature a long-shingle wooden roof. This is a historical site recognized by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. Admission charged. Open daily July and August, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. location: 17 km/10 mi north of Gilbert Plains, then turn east on Negrych Rd. p: 204-548-2326 Grandview WATSON CROSSLEY COMMUNITY MUSEUM Watson Crossley Community Museum includes a large collection of early settlement artifacts of different nationalities, a log homesteader's cabin, a stone and arrowhead collection, an antique car collection, a large variety of antique tractors and agricultural machinery, restored and furnished pioneer home, one room school house, a Ukrainian Orthodox church, a Phoenix steam hauler, a classic snowmobile exhibit, the Burrows Mill Provincial Heritage Site and the starting point for the Historic and Scenic Tour in the RM of Grandview. The museum is open June 20 to September 1, 10 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily, other times by appointment. Admission is charged. Five elevators still stand intact beside an abandoned rail line in sharp contrast to the demolition of thousands of elevators experienced in numerous prairie towns. Guided tours, interpretive centre and arts and crafts gift shop. Open May long weekend to September long weekend, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guided tours by reservation year-round. ELIJAH PIONEER MUSEUM (PHS) St. Elijah Pioneer Museum is the oldest standing Romanian church in Manitoba. It was built by Romanian pioneers in 1908 and restored in 1979. Its design reflects traditional church forms common in Bukovyna and Romania, then part of the Austrian Empire.
