Its size and shape gave it the nickname "The Postage Stamp Province." On July 15, 1870 Manitoba officially became a Canadian province. location: Hwy. 6 at Oak Point SELKIRK PARK On the banks of the historic Red River, Selkirk Park offers excellent serviced campgrounds, boat launching pads, picnic areas and outdoor swimming pool. Home to a bird sanctuary and observation deck. location: corner of Eveline and Queen p: 204-785-4958 Stonewall Quarry Park 115 STEEP ROCK BEACH PARK Located on the shores of Lake Manitoba, the park includes sandy beaches, a campground, cabins, outdoor stage area, marina, nature trails and playground. The village is built atop a large limestone outcrop that has eroded over time and, through the wave action of Lake Manitoba, formed the beautiful and unique cliffs and sandy beaches that line the shores. location: 195 km northwest of Winnipeg via Hwy. 6 and PR 239 QUARRY PARK STONEWALL Giant limestone kilns form the focus of this unique park, which features a walking trail, manmade lake, beach, picnic areas, ball diamonds and campground. Quarry Days are celebrated the third weekend in August. Quarry Park Heritage Art Centre is open daily. The unique sound from the waves is said to be the Manitou, or Great Spirit (in Ojibway, "Manito-bau"). The legend survives in the Province's name—Manitoba. location: on Hwy. 68, 60 km west of Hwy. 6 and 68 junction WILLOW CREEK HERITAGE PARK This is the original landing site for Icelandic settlers who came to the region in 1875. Commemorative markers honour Icelandic and Ukrainian settlements in the area. location: Hwy. 9 between Winnipeg Beach and Gimli WINNIPEG BEACH PROVINCIAL PARK This historic vacation spot offers a famous sand beach, a restored boardwalk, outdoor stage, swimming, picnic areas, a marina and tennis courts. Nearby are restaurants, stores, churches, recreational facilities and a museum. It also boasts one of the best wind surfing bays on Lake Winnipeg. INTERLAKE
