22 Trappist Monastery Ruins THE HISTORICAL MUSEUM OF ST. JAMES-ASSINIBOIA The original 19th century William Brown settler home comes alive with costumed actors depicting pioneer Brown and Taylor families. Pioneer artifacts are in the display building. Annual Heritage Day in August and special children's programs in July and August. Park open May long weekend to September long weekend, daily 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. Museum hours 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday in May, 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. daily, June to Labour Day. PAUL'S ANGLICAN CHURCH St. Paul's Anglican Church was constructed in 1825 to accommodate the increasing population of the Red River Settlement. Known as Middlechurch because it was located between St. John's and St. Andrew's churches, it was consecrated as St. Paul's in 1853. It was a focal point for settlement northward along the Red River. location: 1 km/.6 mi off Main St. on Balderstone Rd. ST. VITAL MUSEUM Trappist Monastery Ruins (PHS) – the Trappist Order came to St. Norbert in 1892 and built a self-sufficient monastery in 1903-1905, including milking barns, stables, a cheese house, apiary, sawmill and cannery. Fire gutted the vacated church and residential wing in 1983. The beautiful stone shell, set in a park, is one of many sites developed along the Red River. Open mid-May to September. location: 1 km/.6 mi west of Pembina Hwy. on rue du Monastère off rue des Trappistes The former St. Vital Police Station, located within the Fire Station. Displays include history of St. Vital, the original 1939 Fargo Pumper truck and a copy of the handwritten diary by Victor Mager who was at Fort Garry in 1870 when Thomas Scott was executed. Summer hours: June 2 to August 31, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Winter hours: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday. Closed statutory holidays.
