14 HOME GAME PLAYBOOK saturday, august 29, 2015 Winnipeg Free press CHeeR & dANCe teAM proFile NICk's Q&A YeARs oN stuNt teAM: two HoMetowN: Winnipeg Post-seCoNdARY studIes: apprenticing as an industrial Mechanic wHAt INsPIRed You to tRY out FoR tHe CHeeR teAM? i was looking for a way to continue stunting in the off season for competitive cheer. i ended up becoming completely enthralled with the energy you feel standing in the centre of that stadium. wHAt's YouR dANCING/CHeeRLeAdING bACkGRouNd? i've cheered for three years, but was spending time at open gym doing parkour for a year prior, which definitely gave me a head start in aerial awareness once i started learning how to tumble properly in cheer. wHAt otHeR AtHLetIC PuRsuIts do You eNJoY? at this point the only sport i train for is cheerleading. Between technical training, coaching, and weight lifting, it doesn't leave much extra time, but before cheer i trained in mixed martial arts, and before that i played lacrosse and hockey! wHAt CoMMuNItY eVeNt do You Most Look FoRwARd to eACH YeAR? Folk Festival has always been a staple of summer for me, as is Canada day on Osborne. i love all of the events that you can be a part of in the exchange, from MeMe at the Cube to the Fringe Festival. any time the city comes together to celebrate, i try my best to get down to join them! wHAt CHeeR teAM exPeRIeNCe ARe You Most exCIted About tHIs seAsoN? i'm excited to really harness all of the experience we gained at grey Cup last year, and really push our team to see what we are capable of while performing! Having the grey Cup at home this year is a perfect opportunity to blow people away with an unforgettable performance, and i can't wait to show our city what we are capable of! wHAt boMbeRs eVeNt HAs beeN Most MeMoRAbLe FoR You so FAR tHIs YeAR? i love the opportunity to put a smile on the kids faces. even doing something as simple as lifting them to shoulder level for a picture, and seeing how excited they are, is an experience i will never forget from Bombers. Is tHeRe oNe sPeCIAL PLACe You'd suGGest GReY CuP FANs VIsIt wHILe tHeY'Re IN wINNIPeG? the Forks is one of Winnipeg's biggest must-sees in my opinion. the food, the art, and the landscape is something you have to experience when you're visiting our city! wHAt Is oNe tHING PeoPLe wouLd be suRPRIsed to kNow About You? i'm a very high energy person, so it might come as a surprise to some people to know that in my downtime i spend a lot of time meditating, and writing slam poetry. wHeRe do You see YouRseLF IN FIVe YeARs? i see myself leading the evolution of cheerleading in our province. i want to give back to the cheer community everything cheerleading has given me, and help kids reach their full potential by pushing Manitoba to be leaders in Canada in our sport!
