He admitted that while he'll be prepared, he'll also be full of anticipation. "You just don't want nerves to get to you," he says. "They've given us kits with the test questions, so I'll go through them and get in a little training at work. Once I get there, I'll just try to play to my strengths, and go from there." Competition veteran Ken Wiebe, 54 — who's holds 11 provincial titles and four national titles — says preparation is the key to performing well. "Our coach helps us out quite a bit with the layout of the track and other key details," he says. "From there, you just have to have fun and go out and compete. I just love the competition. It's great to test yourself against competitors from other provinces, and then enjoy their company when it's all over." Fellow driver Denis Roberts, 57, says this will be his fourth trip to the nationals — a trip he hopes will have a different ending than the previous three. "I placed third in two of them, so I'm hoping to do it this time (finish first) in the tandem- tandem event. At the same time, we were ecstatic at what we did last year (winning the team competition), so we'll be aiming for the same result. Darcy's a great coach, and it looks like we've got a great team, so I think we'll do well. It's not the world finals, so you have to have fun, loosen up and enjoy the experience." ❙ maniToba Trucking facTS: Our Manitoba trucking industry pays up to $45,000 per truck per year in taxes and fees.
