Pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods
have homes for every walk of life
By Jennifer McFee
>> Bridgwater is blazing a family-friendly trail with its focus on walking paths and greenspace.
Developed by Manitoba Housing, the completed neighbourhoods in southwest Winnipeg will
boast 30 kilometres of dedicated park trails that all link to Bridgwater Centre, along with seven
playgrounds and three spectacular fountains.
For Dwayne Rewniak, executive director of housing delivery and land development, it's essential
to ensure that Bridgwater is a walkable neighbourhood.
"The idea behind it is that it will almost be easier for a resident who lives in the area to get to the
town centre by walking or bicycling rather than taking their car," he says.
"We really want to put the emphasis on the pedestrian in the neighbourhood as opposed to the
automobile."
Bridgwater encompasses three neighbourhoods plus a town centre. Development began on
Bridgwater Forest in 2007. With 1,100 single-family homes and about 500 multi-family units, it's
now 90% complete.
Bridgwater Lakes, with four phases of development that began in 2010, will feature 1,190 single-
family homes, and the newest community, Bridgwater Trails, will have about 1,200 single-family
homes and more than 1,000 multi-family units.
