The Pas The Pas, known as the "Gateway to the North," is actually three distinct communities: the Town of The Pas, The Opaskwayak Cree Nation, and the rural municipality of Kelsey, which includes the farming community, Wanless and Village of Cranberry Portage. Major events include the Chamber's Annual Trade Show and Sale, Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival, Opaskwayak Indian Days, agricultural fair and exhibition, and the Bill Bannock Fishing Classic. Sam Waller Museum – The Pas Grand Rapids On the shore of Lake Winnipeg, a section of a tramway built in 1877 by the Hudson's Bay Company has been re-laid in Tramway Park. Western Canada's first railway, the tramway, allowed goods to be carried around the rapids from Lake Winnipeg to the Saskatchewan River Leaf Rapids Visit Leaf Rapids, the "hidden treasure" of the north, in the heart of forests, sand eskers and 10,000 lakes. Explore hundreds of kilometres of safe navigable waterways in search of trophy fish. There are campgrounds, rustic cabins, fly-in services, guides and full services. Visit the recreational facilities and stores at The Town Centre. The gift shop carries a variety of local arts and crafts, books and tourist information. Open year-round. Free admission. p: 204-473-8682 Norway House (PHS) In Norway House (PHS) on the bank of the Nelson River is the site of three former Hudson's Bay Company fur trade structures — Archway Warehouse (1840-41); Jail (1855-56) and Powder Magazine (1837-38). It is rich in Cree and Métis culture, fur trade history, diverse waterways and geography. Rossville Mission, where the syllabics of the Cree language were created by Methodist Minister James Evans in 1842, stands on a point on Little Playgreen Lake. Snow Lake The Manitoba Star Attraction Mining Museum has a collection of mining artifacts including equipment such as drills, mucking machines, old mine rescue equipment and old maps. See a replica of a raise and a drift, a painting of a cross-section of a mine, and some of the clothes the miners wore. Guided tours are offered from June to September. Group tours welcome.
