Rivers The Clack Family Heritage Museum near Rivers welcomes you to share their memories of the past. They have antique automobiles, equipment and other items used in pioneer living. In the spirit of the early pioneers, admission is free but donations are accepted. The Assiniboine First Nation called it Little Dance Hill and it was a landmark for explorers and settlers travelling across the prairie. Marringhurst Heritage House near Rock Lake is an elegant venue for group events, with catering that serves light meals. Built in 1909, this turn-of- the-century farmhouse museum has a beautiful lawn and modern kitchen facilities. Open in July and August and by appointment. They have several hundred freight and passenger cars, 200 steam and diesel engines, and three control boards operate up to 12 trains at once. The landscaped layout includes 2,500 ft of track. The Railroad Museum and Picture Gallery showcases over 2,000 interesting items including pictures, railroad artifacts, books, magazines, and more. Tours welcome. Open by appointment. Admission charged. p: 204-585-2419 Stop by the Symonds Kiosk in Sandy Lake. It's a display board dedicated to the railroaders of the Rossburn Subdivision of the Canadian National Railways. The board contains a schematic of the Rossburn Subdivision with many railway pictures and photos of Sandy Lake area pioneer families. p: 204-585-2419 Explore what it was like to be a Ukrainian in Manitoba at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Museum in Sandy Lake. The museum features artifacts from the 1899 Riding Mountain Settlement with displays of arts and crafts, Easter eggs, wood carvings, traditional breads, hand-embroidered clothing, and musical instruments. There's even a replica of log house complete with thatched roof. Open during July and August and by appointment. The camp operated during 1915 and 1916, training over 38,000 troops of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. These soldiers would fight in France, in Flanders and at Vimy Ridge. Training trenches and military cemetery are visible.
