VISITOR INFORMATION 144 2012 PASSPORT INFORMATION ENTERING CANADA Make sure that you are carrying proper identification for yourself and any children travelling with you in the vehicle. A passport is not mandatory for entry into Canada but it is a preferable piece of identification. If you are a Canadian or American citizen or a permanent resident of either country, other acceptable identification includes the following: • an enhanced driver's licence; • a birth certificate with accompanying photo identification (such as a regular driver's licence); • a permanent residence or green card; • a citizenship card or a certificate of citizenship or naturalization; or • a Certificate of Indian Status. CANADIAN DUTY-FREE SHOPS in Manitoba EMERSON DUTY-FREE EXEMPTION FOR RETURNING U.S. RESIDENTS $800 Duty-free. After more than 48 hours in Canada, U.S. residents may take back up to $800 fair retail value of merchandise for personal or household use free of United States duty or tax, once every 30 days. Up to 100 cigars (non-Cuban), 1 L (33.8 fl oz) of alcoholic beverage (if the resident has attained the age of 21) and 200 cigarettes (1 carton) per person, may be included in the duty-free exemption. Goods must accompany the resident upon arrival in the United States. U.S. residents visiting Canada for less than 48 hours may take back $200 worth of merchandise duty-free. The following may be included, but the total fair retail value must not exceed $200: 50 cigarettes, 10 cigars (non-Cuban), 150 ml (5 fl oz) of alcoholic beverages or alcoholic perfume. Products of Cuban origin are prohibited. DAYLIGHT TIME Central Daylight Time is in effect for an eight-month period beginning the second Sunday in March and ending the first Sunday in November. Clocks move ahead one hour in March and fall back one hour in November when Central Standard Time returns. 80 km/h is the maximum speed limit on most rural two-lane roadways. It replaces 50 mph. 90 km/h is the maximum speed limit on many highways. It replaces 55 mph. 100 km/h is the maximum speed limit on some access controlled highways. It replaces 60 mph. Fahrenheit to Celsius: Subtract 32 from the number of Fahrenheit, then multiply by 5/9. Celsius to Fahrenheit: Multiply the number by 9/5 and add 32. VOLUME Canadian gallon to litres: Multiply number of Canadian imperial gallons by 4.5. Litres to Canadian gallon: Multiply number of litres by .22. The Canadian gallon is based on the imperial quart, which is one-quarter larger than the U.S. quart.
