Time for Take Action Camp in Ontario or Arizona. metowe.com/camp T he revolution taking place in the field of corporate social responsibility has companies making "giving back" an in- tegral part of doing business — cutting a big cheque once a year to some lucky charity is no longer good enough. For 10 years, TELUS has encouraged its employees to "give where we live," and in doing so transformed their workforce into an army of change-makers. From May 16 to June 14, thousands of TELUS employees, friends, family and even retirees across Cana- da volunteered for local causes as part of TELUS Days of Giving. Heather Scott, a client support facilitator with TELUS, shares her experience of one of this year's initiatives: a schoolyard clean- up project. How did your team approach the schoolyard clean-up? When we got there, the garden looked overgrown and rundown. Twenty to 30 people spent the day digging through muck and clay — it was pretty heavy work. We filled the spaces around trees with wood chips, planted loads of flowers and even uncovered four old garden plots separated by a path in the shape of a butterfly. Nobody expected to find that there. At the end of the day, it was rewarding to step back and see how beautiful everything looked. How do you feel about your contribution? Being able to give someone else's kids what I can give mine is what drives me. My 11-year-old daughter was actually with us this year. I make sure to involve my kids whenever I can so they learn the importance of giving back from a young age. Why was this an important initiative for your team? Volunteering brings out a more generous side of people that you don't necessarily get to see in a work environment. Getting togeth- er outside of that space and giving back to our community helped bring the team closer.
