7 IT'S EASY TO ENJOY YOUR JOB WHEN YOU BELIEVE IN WHAT YOU'RE DOING, AND FOR THE FOLKS WHO WORK AT CARGILL, AN ORGANIZATION THAT EMPLOYS 8,000 PEOPLE ACROSS CANADA, THERE'S A LOT OF JOY IN THE WORKPLACE. Cargill Limited was once again named one of Manitoba's Top Employers, and Jeff Vassart, President of Cargill Limited, said that as an employee himself, there are many things about his employer that he appreciates. Cargill employs people in a wide array of roles from marketing and communications to legal to corporate affairs to grain buying to plant and facility operations to ensure Cargill successfully meets their customers needs. Employees work directly and indirectly, with farmers to help them be more successful in raising either crops or livestock, and they also work with food companies that take the farmers' product and put it on tables of people all around the world. "I think it's a very noble purpose. Our aspiration is to be a global leader in nourishing people," Vassart said. "That, to me, is something I really enjoy because I think it's very meaningful work our organization does." Vassart said Cargill really is a company that cares about its employees as well as its customers. They work with farmers, which he said Cargill employees enjoy immensely, and at the root of it all, their business is people. "In a business like ours it really is all about the people and how people work together. The work that we do with our customers, it's very much a people business, so Cargill invests significantly in its people." He said that investment can be made through professional development and other resources Cargill makes available to its employees, but it can also be done another way, by investing in communities. Cargill is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year and created the Together We Thrive campaign, where six charitable organizations across the country were each awarded $25,000. Dauphin's Food For Thought Program was the Manitoba winner. Financial contributions are important, Vassart said, but Cargill also strives to give its employees the opportunity to take a hands-on approach to making a difference in their communities. Through Cargill Cares groups across the country, employees can use paid workdays to volunteer their time with charitable organizations. "Yes there's the financial contributions that we make but I think what makes Cargill different is we do that plus a significant emphasis is placed on getting our employees involved through our Cargill Cares Councils… whereby we give employees the opportunity to volunteer their time, get involved with a wide range of organizations that do good work in communities to make them better." Vassart said one of the nicest things about working for Cargill is that the company's moral compass points the same direction as his own, allowing for a sense of satisfaction in his work that really hits home. "For me personally, what I really appreciate about Cargill is the values and the culture of the organization align very well with my own personal beliefs," he said. "The respect that we give our customers, our employees, the integrity in which we do business. And something that's really important for us is making sure every one of our employees and customers goes home safe to their families every day. So those cor e values of Cargill are something I really appreciate about the work environment and the organization that we're a part of." The Winnipeg office is Cargill's Canadian headquarters, which Vassart said shows the company's commitment to this city and province, and, he said its downtown location means employees ar e in the midst of the city's ever-growing vibrant hub. And the office environment is fun, Vassart said, which is of great importance to Cargill. Whether it's the fitness facility provided to employees or any other amenities the company offers, the goal is to create an enjoyable work place. "It's just a fun environment for people," Vassart said. "We put a lot of emphasis in trying to create a really positive work environment here in our office in Winnipeg." We help build vibrant and stable communities where we live and work by supporting programs that provide long-term solutions, engage our employees, and provide opportunities to collaborate with others.
