Environmental commitment is one of its major tenets: Wood is derived from recognized sustainable forestry programs and solvents are reclaimed at the Morden facility. And Decor is "committed to improving the local and global community (by supporting) a variety of organizations that give help to the needy, lend a hand to those in trouble and teach values that remind us to show compassion to our neighbour." For example, staff members organize and participate in yearly golf tournaments to raise funds for local charities. "We've raised $826,000 in the past 12 years for three charities," says Dyck, adding a fourth has been included that will support organizations in Morden and Winkler. Another altruistic initiative involves children's table and chair sets built in the factory by employees during their time off. The beautifully crafted sets sell for $250 and they're a big hit with people who buy them as one-of-a-kind gifts for their grandchildren. Proceeds from sales are donated by Decor's CorImpact Lend a Hand Program to Opportunity International Canada (OIC), one of the world's largest non-profit microfinance networks. To date, more than $9,000 has been gifted to OIC. The microloans — 94% of which go to women — allow indigent people throughout the world to start and grow their own small businesses. It's a gift that keeps on giving. As Decor Cabinet Company has demonstrated, with a bit of inspiration and motivation a tiny company can blossom into a great organization that serves its entire community. ■ Two30Nine by decor manager gord wall (below, left) and decor Cabinet Company Ceo and co-founder larry dyck specialize in high-quality cabinetry.
