One ENGAP student from northern Manitoba said that when he had first arrived at the university, he was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the place, but the Engineering Access Program made him feel really welcome. Once students complete 8 of their first year Engineering courses, they are able to choose an area of engineering to specialize in. The choice of programs include: Biosystems, Civil, Electrical and Computer, or Mechanical. A Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering usually takes five or six years. ENGAP offers Indigenous students' academic support such as upgrading, class registration and access to free tutoring. There is a counsellor to offer personal support, as well as resume and job search advice. Students also receive assistance in obtaining financial support, finding accommodations and daycare information. ENGAP offers an opportunity for Indigenous students (First Nation, Metis and Inuit) to gain the necessary prerequisite courses to enter into the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba. ENGAP is not a special degree. We simply give extra support to Indigenous students throughout their program in the Faculty of Engineering. We provide a two week Summer Orientation with introductory classes in math, computer skills, engineering design as well as university study skills to help new students transition into university. Students who did not have access to a rigorous program at the high school level, may be required to take additional upgrading courses in math, physics and chemistry in order to prepare them for first-year engineering courses. ENGAP students study all of the other courses in the regular engineering program of their choice. Our program application forms are due on May 1st and can be found on our website at www.engap.com University of Manitoba Engineering Staff wHAT IS THE ENGINEERING ACCESS pROGRAM (ENGAp)?
