"They're super pumped to be involved in curling in Manitoba. They're helping us out in any way they can, and are trying to do some different things to promote the sport in Mani- toba. For example, they actually had (2015 cham- pion) reid carruthers come out to make an appearance at their booth at the Mani- toba agriculture show," he said. "reid really enjoyed his day there and said the staff at Viterra are just great people." Viterra's director of corpo- rate affairs, Jeff cockwill, said the company — which also fills the role of title spon- sor for the saskatchewan Viterra scotties Tournament of Hearts — feels privileged to sponsor high-level curling in saskatchewan, and now Manitoba. "Viterra has significant presence in rural commu- nities across Western canada where curling is an important sport that brings people together," he said. "We became title sponsor of the Viterra scotties Tournament of Hearts three years ago, and found it was a great way to connect with our employees and our farm customers. This success prompted us to work with curlManitoba to enter into a partnership to become the title sponsor of the Viterra championship. This is our first year as title sponsor, and we're excited to be a major part of this important event." He added that Viterra's commitment to community involvement isn't new. "Viterra has been part of Western canada for over 100 years," he said. "in that time, the com- pany has been a significant contributor to numer- ous organizations that help enrich our communi- ties. Our philosophy is to make a positive and long-lasting impact in the areas where we live and work. By making targeted community investments, we want to be aligned with initiatives that support our values and our relationships with employees and customers." Baker said he liked the reference to "long-lasting impact." "Our hope is that Viterra won't go anywhere for a while," he said. "They're just our fourth title spon- sor since 1925 (Mcdonald Tobacco 1925-1979; labatt's 1980-1994; safeway1995-2015), so we'd really like to keep that continuity going. From what i can see, they're committed to the area (Western canada) and won't be going any- where anytime soon. That's great, because they really want to promote positive things about the sport." cockwill said that Viterra is committed to show- casing the good values exhibited by elite-level curlers. "We find that in sports such as curling and junior hockey (Viterra sponsors teams in the Manitoba Junior Hockey league (MJHl), saskatchewan Junior Hockey league (sJHl) and alberta Junior Hockey league (aJHl)), there's a common thread of teamwork, determination, integrity and high performance," cockwill said. "These are the same principles that guide our employees in delivering superior service and advice to our customers." With an enthusiastic sponsor locked up and a deep, talented field ready to go, the Viterra championship — which will run from Feb. 10-14 at the selkirk recreation complex — figures to be a hotly-contested tournament, said Baker. "Once again, the curling figures to be great," he said. "We're really excited. some good young teams (dunstone, Forrester and Oryniak) will be trying to beat established teams (2015 champion reid carruthers and 2015 runner- up Mike Mcewen). There's a lot of depth in Manitoba, so we're looking forward to some intense competition." 'Viterra has significant presence in rural communities across Western Canada where curling is an important sport that brings people together.'
