28 who's who WEDDINGS Ballroom Glitz Swag-festooned ceilings, elegant backdrops and LED wall washing enhance any space, and chic chair covers, florals, crystals and accessories complete the picture. Decorations by Rick owner Rick Mayhew says once couples set a budget, wedding professionals can create a beautiful setting that reflects their personal taste. And they can do it in any venue. It's one thing to gild the lily in a grand ballroom, and even marquee tents have built-in charms, but Mayhew says transforming a bland community hall into a romantic dreamscape is a real joy. "When you start putting in ceiling swagging and backdrops and all the tables and centrepieces and chair coverings, now it's the Taj Mahal. I love creating the magic. I love when people walk in and they'll grab their face and catch their breath." For his own son Braidan's wedding, Mayhew went over the top at a luxe downtown venue. He put LED lights under the tables to make them glow from within. Half the centrepieces were made with massive crystal candelabras topped with sky-high florals and the other half held manzanita branches dripping with crystals and twinkle lights. Covered chairs were accessorized with silver mesh caps and elasticized tutu skirts, and when it was time for the first dance, a cascade of dry ice created a cloud on the white dance floor. Whether you're aiming for glam and glitz, or soft romance, decor options run the gamut from chiavari chair and linen rentals to full-service event planning. Mayhew advises booking a decorator four to six months in advance, but choosing a venue is the first order of the day. Once that's done, everything else is icing on the cake. ❦ "Whether you're aiming for glam and glitz, or soft romance, decor options run the gamut from chiavari chair and linen rentals to full-service event planning."
