Energy effi cient The building practices of MHBA members make Manitoba's new built and renovated homes the most energy effi cient in Canada. Now is a great time to build. An AAA security consultant works with homeowners to help them choose the right security system – and then works with home builders to coordinate everything from pre-wiring to full installation. Pre-wiring occurs after doors and windows are in place, provided temperatures are above -20°C. "After pre-wiring is complete, ensure that your builder has had all wires pulled through the walls so they're visible to make it as easy as possible to complete the final steps of the installation," Gerrard says, add- ing homeowners should be present for the initial startup. "you'll learn about all the functions of your system from your AAA installer, and have the opportunity to ask questions," she says. "Be sure to have your smartphone or tablet available if you're using the Take Control app, which can remotely manage all as- pects of your security system and smart- home devices." Creative Audio's Jeff kowerchuk says a prop- erly installed, well-scripted system provides maximum convenience for homeowners. "Safety is also enhanced in a huge way. not only can you push a button on your phone to put on the lights as you walk in, but you can control lighting remotely from work so it looks like someone's home. And if one of your kids enters the home after school, the system can be set to send a text to parents telling them that Johnny is safe at home." At the end of the day, smart systems provide peace of mind, says Accurate Technology Group's Laurence Rosenberg. "your home is your retreat. When you come home after a long day at work, it's now your time to unwind and relax," he says. "Having all that technology — entertainment system, home automation, security — integrated seamlessly and unobtru- sively throughout a home creates a smart home that allows people to enjoy their home, and life, that much more." "The people we've installed systems for love it — they wouldn't go back," he says. "A lot of people want the ability to control their home while they're in it and while they're away from it." MTS company AAA Security offers a range of options and apps that let you use your home system, smart- phone or tablet to close the garage door, turn lights on and off, view security video images and more. AAA Security general manager kathie Gerrard says ad- vance planning is the key to a smooth security/smart home installation. "The first thing you should do is find out about all the different AAA security options. Then you need to de- cide which devices and systems best meet your needs and integrate their requirements into your home build- ing plan," she says.
