T he largest annual multi-sport event in Manitoba is expected to draw 1,000 or more participants in age-friendly events ranging from Scrabble, cribbage and snooker to swimming, golf, bowling, track-and-field and team events such as slo- pitch and pickleball. Coordinated by the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults in Manitoba (ALCOA-MB), the province's 34th Games make a happy return to Brandon, which was the first city outside of Winnipeg to play host some 30 years ago. United Commercial Travellers (UTC) James B. Chrisp Council #448 member Dave Poets suggested Brandon make a pitch for the Games after he and his wife Phyllis attended the Athletes Banquet in Neepawa in 2014. "I was impressed with the organization when I was in Neepawa and I thought what they were doing was impressive," Poets says. Fellow UTC member Bernie Chrisp was enlisted to act as Host Committee chair, and since Chrisp is also a member of the Rotary Club of Brandon, he was asked to invite the Rotary Club to join forces with UTC — making 2016 the first year two service clubs have collaborated to organize the Games. It's also the first time the clubs have worked on a project together. Poet and Rotary Club of Brandon past-president Chuck LaRocque are serving as Host Committee vice chairs, and Poets says Chrisp, 70, was a natural choice as chair. Among many sports-related volunteer activities, he has chaired the Manitoba Games Council and the Canada Special Olympics in Brandon, served on the Sport Manitoba board of directors, and carried the Winter Olympic Games torch on its final leg in Brandon in 2010, the same year he acted as logistics chair for the Memorial Cup. Chrisp says everyone who attends the Games will receive a visitors guide that lists hotels, motels and campgrounds, attractions, unique shops, restaurants and pubs, and he hopes participants will take the opportunity to explore the city. "We want people to stay as long as they can to enjoy the city of Brandon," he says. "We want everybody to come and enjoy the great hospitality that the city has to offer." Along with promoting recreational activities for Manitobans ages 55 to 90-plus, the Games foster a healthy social and cultural atmosphere through entertainment and special events. A Variety Concert on opening day and an Athletes' Banquet and dance will be held at the Keystone Centre, which is also the Games headquarters. Venues throughout the city include the Glen Lea Golf Course, Brandon Seniors for Seniors Co-op, Riverview Curling Club, the Brandon Legion and the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre. Transportation, including a wheelchair accessible van, will be available for participants. 2016 is also a qualifying year for the Canada 55 Plus Games, which will be held in Brampton, Ont., Aug. 16-19, 2016. Manitoba participants who wish to compete in the national games must qualify in Brandon.
