T he Manitoba Museum was inspired by then premier Sir Redmond Roblin's admonition to famed suffragette Nellie McClung, "Nice women don't want the vote," when it named the exhibit. McClung once lived in Wawanesa, and the Sipsweske Museum has a permanent tribute on display in her honour. Manitoba women were the first in North America to claim the right to vote in 1916, during the First World War. The exhibit, which will tour to museums throughout Canada, also explains why some Canadians, such as First Nations, did not have the right to vote in federal elections until 1960, and why some people had their voting rights removed. Housed in the original 1901 office building of the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Co., the Sipsweske Museum contains many artifacts pertaining to the area's history, including a display featuring Wawanesa company founder Alzonzo Fowler Kempton's desk and company treasures, as well as First Nations and pioneer artifacts. Located at 102-4th Street, the museum is open in July August. On a related note, the RCA Museum, Canada's National Artillery Museum at Canadian Forces Base Shilo, is hosting its own special exhibit to mark a century of women's voting rights. Victory: Women, War & The Vote will be featured at the museum until June 17, with costume displays and artifacts related to both the suffrage movement and Canada's role in the First World War. ❙ UP IN THE SKY After an absence of almost a decade, the Manitoba Air Show returns to Southport Airport at Portage la Prairie on June 4. The Canadian Forces CF-18 Demo Team, the Snowbirds, the Sky Hawks Parachute Team and a Canadian Forces Search and Rescue Technicians demonstration are among the highlights, along with a display of a massive CC-130 Hercules aircraft, model aircraft, military vehicles and weaponry and a classic car show. Visitors can check out a fashion show, artisan market, beer garden and more. Tickets are available at www.universe.com/mbairshow. ❙ BRANDON HOSTS 55 PLUS GAMES The theme of the 2016 Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries 55 Plus Games in Brandon is Young at Heart, and there are plenty of age-friendly events in store for participants, volunteers and spectators June 14-16. Brandon was the first city outside of Winnipeg to host the games about 30 years ago. Coordinated by the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults in Manitoba (ALCOA- MB), the 34th games include a variety night and athletes banquet and dance, along with games that run the gamut from track-and-field to cribbage and pickleball. The United Commercial Travellers (UTC) James B. Chrisp Council #448 and the Rotary Club of Brandon teamed up to bring the games to the Wheat City. Participants in the Brandon games are eligible to sign up for the Canada 55 Plus Games, which will be held in Brampton, Ont., Aug. 16-19. Visit the 55 Plus Games page on the ALCOA-MB website at www.alcoamb.org for more information. ❙ " NICE WOMEN " COMING TO WAWANESA The exhibit, which will tour to museums throughout Canada, also explains why some Canadians, such as First Nations, did not have the right to vote in federal elections until 1960, and why some people had their voting rights removed. Father and daughter John Houlden and Grace Atkins both won medals in track events at the 2014 Canada 55 Plus Games.
