Training, developing and motivating everyone to promote and pursue safety and health excellence helps us all to build terrific habits and attitudes within our company – and at home and in our communities. Built to RELY ON. TM newflyer.com mcicoach.com This year, North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week in Brandon is going to be "big- ger than ever," according to event organizers. N AOSH Week, which runs from May 1-7, aims to focus the attention of employers, employees, the general public, and all partners in occupational safety and health on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home, and in the community. On Wednesday, May 4, Brandon will be hosting its launch and other events at Shoppers Mall from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Greg Brown, City of Brandon Safety and Health coordinator and co- chair of the Brandon NAOSH Planning Committee, says the theme of this year's NAOSH Week really resonated with the organizers. "This year's theme is 'Make Safety a Habit — What's Your Reason?' The Brandon NAOSH Planning Committee knows that their reason is to try to bring more safety and health awareness to Brandon and surrounding communities," says Brown. "To put it in perspective, in 2014 there were 26 people in Manitoba who lost their lives on the job and another 30,202 who reported a work- place injury to the Manitoba Workers Compensation Board. When you look at numbers like that it is obvious there is still a lot more work to do in making safety a habit." This will be the fourth annual NAOSH Week launch in Brandon. In the past, organizers have presented a wide range of events from street hock- ey to barbecues. This year, organizers decided to take things up a notch by hosting a larger event in the mall. There will be a number of informative and interactive displays at the Safety and Health Exhibitor Zone. Several safety associations and local businesses are participating in this zone to support the initiative and to encourage injury prevention. Food court patrons will be presented with fun yet informative activities that they can complete while they're grab- bing a bite to eat. The official launch takes place at noon, and will feature speeches from dignitaries, including Brandon City Coun. John Loregio; Kim Keating, portfolio leader for the Public Sector with SAFE Work Manitoba; Dan Rob- ertson, director of Regional Offices for the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba; and Barry Cowan, regional manager, Workplace Safety and Health Division. Throughout the day, and during the course of the week, there will be opportunities for NAOSH Week participants to win prizes, and they're also encouraged to take some time and add the reason "why you make safety a habit," to a large display board. Brown notes that more Brandon organizations are getting involved with NAOSH Week every year, and some businesses are hosting their own events outside the main launch. "When I moved here nine years ago, no one even knew what NAOSH was," Brown says. "It's taken a while to get it going, but the event has really taken off."
