And for parents, it's never too soon to start talking with your kids about career prospects available throughout the province. To get a jumpstart on these important career conversations, Grade 8 students and their parents are encouraged to attend the Rotary Career Symposium's Sneak Peek event at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg on May 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. During this time, families will have the chance to speak with employers and experts from various industries, so there will truly be a topic to suit every taste. Representatives will be on hand from different sector councils involved with Manitoba Career Prospects, which is a program to help students discover different career opportunities in the province. Experts will be available from the Manitoba Print Industry Association, the Manitoba Aerospace Human Resource Council, the Manitoba Tourism Education Council, and the Arts and Cultural Industries Association. There will also be representation from the Manitoba Customer Contact Association, the Manitoba Construction Sector Council, the Information and Communication Technologies Association of Manitoba, and the Canadian Manufacturers Association. Lori Slobodian, program co-ordinator for Manitoba Career Prospects, said experts can provide information to families who would like to find out more about opportunities in these specific industries. "Manitoba Career Prospects got involved because we reach out to parents to provide information to them so that they can join their kids and talk to their kids about career opportunities in Manitoba," she said. "Some of the actual sector councils that are going to be there on Monday night will have a representative to talk directly to parents about that industry that they represent." Many older students in grades 9 to 12 will be attending the Rotary Career Symposium with their schools during the day on May 3 and 4. However, it's also useful to start the career conversations early for younger students. "They didn't want to exclude the younger kids but they wanted them to have a little more time and a little less busy atmosphere, so they wanted them to come in the evening," Slobodian said. "The regular floor will be open, so all of the regular exhibitors will be there as well. The general public is also invited, but they're targeting parents and that Grade 8 age group." Although career conversations often occur in schools, parents also make valuable contributions to the topic. "We have seen in the research that parents can play a very important part in that whole discussion, so giving the parents some extra information about what's going on in the industries that are here in Manitoba is always helpful," Slobodian said. "In terms of the evening event, what we as industry sector councils can provide is that one-on-one conversation. In contrast, when they go to the career fair with their school, it's quite busy and they may not have time to have that individual conversation. The evening provides a nice, relaxed atmosphere to actually have that one-on-one with somebody who works in the industry." Since today's students will likely be employed in multiple careers during their working life, they need to be familiar with new technology as well as with social and organizational systems. The Manitoba Career Prospects program encourages parents to help their children forge their career paths by exploring opportunities in different fields and connecting with the right people, such as school counsellors and teachers. They also recommend being engaged in the process by speaking with employers and industry leaders in Manitoba. Admission for the Sneak Peek event on May 2 is $2 for Grade 8 students and free for parents who are accompanying their Grade 8 children. Rotary Career Symposium organizers encourage the general public to come out on the evening of May 2 as well. The information being shared is perfect timing for university graduates who are just starting to seek employment or for those in career transition.
