02 - GARDEN Home 2016 & BACK GARDEN CREATING BEAUTIFUL, BOUNTIFUL BACKYARD HAVENS TO THE G ardens have seasons, and so, it seems, do gardeners themselves. Carla Hrycyna, co-owner at St. Mary's Nurs- ery and Garden Centre, says she's already noticed a trend — there are a lot of potential little gardeners arriving in strollers, and she thinks that might have something to do with the ongoing popularity of fairy gardens. "I think it's really targeting the child and I'm becoming a real advocate," says Hrycyna. "We're not only teaching the young thirty- something how to garden; they are showing their kids how to garden at a younger age as well." Younger adults are coming into the centre wanting to learn how to grow vegetables and herbs, and Hrycyna knows just what to recommend: chives and the very trendy basil varieties. "There are whole collections of different kinds of basils that you can go into and they make great salads." There's also been a resurgence of interest among gardeners with a few more summers under their belts, many of whom are seeking top-of-the-line tomato plants. and herbs, and Hrycyna knows just what to recommend: chives and the very trendy basil varieties. basil varieties.
